Dairy Farmers of America Incorporated (DFA) (Kansas City, Missouri), a farmer-owned food cooperative, recently started construction of a $40 million expansion at a facility in Schulenburg, Texas. The investment is aimed at doubling the plant's production of cheese dips and salsa. The primary components of the project are the installation of a packaging line and improvements to the wastewater treatment facility. An additional 125,000 square feet of building space is being constructed and will include a new warehouse, freezer space for raw material storage, a processing kitchen, a boiler area and a product-cooling tunnel. DFA anticipates completing the expansion in first quarter 2010.
The Schulenburg facility was originally built by Carnation Company in 1929 and was the first milk plant in the state of Texas. Mid-American Dairymen acquired the facility in 1974 and subsequently became Dairy Farmers of America after combining several cooperatives. In Texas, DFA also operates a condensed whole and skimmed milk facility in Sulphur Springs and a retail pack butter facility in Winnsboro.
