The plant has completed an expansion that boosted nameplate capacity from 120 million gallons per year to 153 million gallons per year.

The company managed to squeeze out the additional capacity from a process system designed by Vogelbusch USA (Katy, Texas). The Multicont continuous fermentation process now processes 54 million bushels of corn annually. Modifications were performed to the grinding system, and dryers and produce 450,000 tons per year of dried distillers grains.

The plant originally went online in early 2009. The state-of-the-art facility uses minimal natural gas and water to operate, and it has extensive grain handling and storage capabilities. The only plants larger than Tharaldson are owned by ag giants Cargill Incorporated (Minneapolis, Minnesota) and Archer Daniels Midland Company (NYSE:ADM) (Decatur, Illinois).
