Thermal Power Plant Begins Operation in Inner Mongolia

Coal liquefaction is the process of converting coal into oil and petrochemical products by using coal as the raw material. China Shenhua Group's direct-coal-liquefaction project is one of China's major projects and a key strategic measure in maintaining the nation's oil supply. Construction on the project began in August 2004. The project was designed to produce 5 million metric tons and is scheduled to be built in two phases. Three production lines are included in Phase I with an annual production capacity of 3.2 million metric tons and are expected to be put into full operation by year's end.

The thermal power plant, near the Shenhua Coal Liquefaction Project in Yijinhuoluo Banner in Inner Mongolia, is the associated thermal power plant for the first direct-coal-liquefaction production line in China. Construction on the project began in August 2005. The thermal power plant has a circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boiler and air-cooling technology and uses putty slag and waste from the coal-liquefaction production line as fuel. The project calls for building eight CFB boilers, five direct-air-cooled power-generating units. The total planned investment for the project is $570 million.
