Leading the pack is Alabama with 44 projects totaling $4.5 billion. Led by the massive $3.7 billion ThyssenKrupp steel mill project, which is scheduled to begin construction late this year, Alabama is fastest growing market for Metals & Minerals Industry construction in 2007.

After Alabama comes Arizona with 22 projects totaling almost $3.2 billion. Stong metals prices has spurred the feasibility of a host of copper mining projects in Arizona. Earlier this year, Mercator Minerals Limited (Kingman, Arizona) began construction of a $110 million expansion of its Mineral Park copper and molybdenum ore mine. The project is scheduled to be complete by June 2008.

Third on the Top 10 list is Minnesota with almost $3 billion worth of Metals & Minerals Industry spending from 19 projects. Like Alabama spending in Minnesota is elevated by a single mega-project. Minnesota Steel Industries LLC (Saint Paul, Minnesota) is planning a $1.6 billion mine-mouth steel mill complex in Nashwauk, Minnesota. The project will be the first of its kind for North America, situating an integrated steel mill complex at site of a taconite (iron ore) mine. Yesterday, the project acheived a major milestone by receiving approval for its Environmental Impact Statement from the state.

Alaska is fourth on the Top 10 list with ten mining projects totaling $2.8 billion.
