Toshiba Foresees Huge Demand for SCiB Batteries

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Expecting to see a strong growth in demand in the lithium-ion battery industry, Toshiba Corporation (TYO:6502) (Minato, Japan) has begun construction on a second lithium-ion battery plant. Toshiba, along with Taisei Corporation (TYO:1801) (Shinjuku, Japan), selected Kashiwazaki in Niigata prefecture, which is about 300 kilometers northwest of Tokyo, as the site for the facility.

When operational in June of next year, the US$310 million plant, will produce 650,000 supercharged lithium-ion batteries (SCiB) per month at Kashiwazaki Frontier Park. Toshiba's SCiB, which has a life span of 6,000 charge cycles and can reach full charge with a standard home outlet in 30 minutes, has a wide range of applications, including battery-powered electric vehicles and solar power generation.

Toshiba selected Kashiwazaki because of its solid commitment to a low-carbon society. The city is recognized as model area for electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles, and is promoted by the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry to encourage the adoption of both vehicles.
