Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland)--The world's largest offshore wind turbines will be installed at the 860-megawatt (MW) Triton Knoll windfarm in the U.K.

MHI Vestas Wind Systems A/S (OMX:VWS) (Aarhus, Denmark) has been contracted to supply 90 of its newly unveiled 9.5-MW turbines, the V164-9.5, for the project located off the Lincolnshire coast and owned by innogy SE and Statkraft AS (Oslo, Norway). Each turbine is capable of generating enough power for 8,300 homes. The largest turbines in use today are rated at 8 MW, the V164 8.0 MW turbines also from Vestas, installed earlier this year at the Burbo Bank Extension windfarm off the coast of Liverpool in the U.K.. For additional information, see May 30, 2017, article - Ribbon Cut at First 8-Megawatt Turbine Windfarm.

The new turbine is based on the V164 platform used by the 8-MW model and the higher capacity has been achieved with "only minimal design changes, including a redesigned gearbox and cooling system upgrades," Vestas stated. Each turbine measures 195 metres from sea level to blade tip and uses blades weighing 35 tonnes each and measuring 80 metres long.

The news comes a week after Industrial Info reported on Triton Knoll winning a lucrative Contract for Difference (CfD) in the U.K.'s latest power auction. The windfarm, which will be commissioned in 2021-22, will receive a guaranteed price for electricity generated for a period of 15 years. For additional information, see September 13, 2017, article - Offshore Wind is Big Winner in U.K. Power Auctions.

"We achieved a successful result at the CfD auction, thanks to a business case that was designed through collaboration with the supply chain and which puts cost reduction, low cost generation and U.K. content at the forefront of our project," said Triton Knoll Project Director James Cotter. "MHI Vestas is absolutely central to our business plan, which aims to deliver at least 50% U.K. content over the lifetime of the project, while creating significant value for the U.K. and energy consumers from the delivery of our wind farm."

Triton Knoll will now progress toward a financial investment decision likely in 2018 with full onshore construction starting shortly after and offshore construction in 2020. First power will be generated in 2021 with full commissioning in 2022.
