Researched by Industrial Info Resources Australia (Perth, Australia)--Trustpower Limited (Bay of Plenty, New Zealand) is continuing with the construction of a windfarm near Palmer, South Australia, after lodging a development application with the Mid Murray Council in April. The $700 million project will consist of up to 114 turbines, each rated at a capacity of 3 megawatts (MW), to produce approximately 342 MW, which will be enough to power about 200,000 homes.
Trustpower initially intended for the windfarm to have 130 turbines, but reduced the number twice in the last six months following community feedback. Trustpower is awaiting approvals from the Mid Murray Council, which are expected by end of the year. The Mid Murray Council covers several towns near the coast of South Australia.
Trustpower then will submit the proposal to the New South Wales (NSW) Planning Department, and later seek approval from the Planning Assessment Commission.
Subject to turbine selection and approvals, Trustpower might consider building the windfarm in two stages. The project proposal includes construction of a 275-kilovolt (kV) overhead transmission line, which runs about 10 kilometers from the Palmer site to the Tungkillo Substation, and a 275-kV onsite substation. In addition, Trustpower will build a 20- to 30-kilometer, 33-kV internal cable to connect the wind turbines to the onsite substation.
According to Rodney Ahern, business development manager for the company, Trustpower expects to receive all approvals for the project by the end of 2016 and plans to commence construction by 2017. The Mid Murray Council will review the application in the next few months and will finalize the decision by end of the year or early next year.
The project construction will take nearly 24 to 36 months to complete. According to Trustpower, the construction of the windfarm will bring huge benefits to the local community by creating roughly 250 to 300 jobs.
