Tucson Electric Power Having Trouble with New Unit

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Tucson Electric Power, owner of the Springerville Generating Station located in Springerville, Arizona, took a 418 Megawatt (MW) unit offline on Friday, November 3, 2006. Originally, the unit was identified as having a tube leak, but once maintenance workers investigated the leak, they found that the unit needed additional repairs. Maintenance officials at the plant have decided to keep the unit offline for two weeks in order to perform various boiler maintenance consisting of: boiler feed pump work, tube replacements, and a thorough inspection of the boiler. Completion of the outage is expected by mid-November.

The unit is newly operational, having recently come online for commercial operation during the summer of 2006, and is the third unit to be added to Springerville Generating station. The unit has been experiencing minor operating issues, but overall has been running well. The addition of this unit has helped meet increased power demand in the area during the long, hot summers.

Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association developed the Unit 3 project in conjunction with Tucson Electric Power (TEP), the owner and operator of Springerville Units 1 and 2.

Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association is a wholesale electric power supplier owned by the 44 electric cooperatives that it serves. Tri-State generates and transports electricity to its member systems throughout a 250,000 square-mile service territory across Colorado, Nebraska, New Mexico and Wyoming.

Tucson Electric Power (TEP), a subsidiary of UniSource Energy (NYSE:UNS ), provides safe, reliable electric service to more than 385,000 customers in the Tucson metropolitan area.
