Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Plans are moving forward, and construction is expected to begin soon on an 880-megawatt (MW) combined-cycle unit addition at Tennessee Valley Authority's (NYSE:TVE) (TVA) (Knoxville, Tennessee) John Sevier Power Station near Rogersville, Tennessee. The new unit will consist of two General Electric (NYSE:GE) MS7001FA natural gas-fired combustion turbines, two Nooter Eriksen heat-recovery steam-generators, and a single Toshiba steam turbine/generator set. The unit will have the ability to utilize fuel oil as a back-up fuel if necessary.
The existing Sevier Station is home to four Alstom (EPA:ALO) tangential coal-fired boilers and four 200-MW General Electric condensing tandem compound steam turbines. Construction of the plant began in 1952, and the facility became fully operational in 1957. Total coal consumption of the plant is roughly 5,700 tons per day.
In addition to the expansion at John Sevier, TVA is expecting to complete construction of a 718-MW combined-cycle unit addition at company's Lagoon Creek plant this year. Decisions are anticipated in April regarding whether TVA will complete construction of nuclear units 3 and 4 at the Bellefonte site in Alabama. Construction of these two units ceased in 1988 because of lower power demand. If the decision is made to move forward with this project, it will add 2,300 MW of nuclear-generated capacity. Work is under way to complete construction of Unit 2 at TVA's Watts Barr Nuclear Plant, which is expected to come online by 2013, adding 1,220 MW of new capacity.
