Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Didcot A Power Station, owned by RWE npower (Wiltshire, United Kingdom), a subsidiary of RWE AG (OTC:RWEOY) (Essen, Germany), is planning major maintenance for its four operational coal-fired units in 2009.

The coal-fired power plant, located in Didcot, England, has been operational since the early 1970s. At present, three of the four 500-megawatt (MW) units have been modified so that the boilers can also burn natural gas. According to plant officials, work is expected to be done on the four units from April to October, including a major overhaul in Unit 2 that would last almost four months.

Didcot A enters its last years of operation between 2013 and 2015. As of January 2008, the plant can only run for 20,000 more hours, since it opted out of the Large Combustion Plants Directive aimed at emissions. In addition to Didcot A, the company operates the combined-cycle Didcot B power plant, which has a 1,360-MW Siemens (NYSE:SI) (Munich, Germany) unit.

RWE npower supplies about 10% of the electricity supplied in England and in Wales through its coal-fired, combined-cycle and oil-fired facilities for a total output of about 10,000 MW.
