Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--With SpaceX's (Hawthorne, California) most recent, (mostly) successful launch of the Falcon 9 rocket and expectations of nearly 30 total launches to take place over the course of 2016 in Florida, we are reminded of the state's continual growth in the Aviation and Aerospace Industry. According to Enterprise Florida (the lead economic development organization for the state), Florida is number two in the U.S. for aerospace and aviation establishments, with over 2,000 companies. Industrial Info is tracking 10 active or recently completed projects totalling more than $380 million in Florida's aviation and aerospace sector.
In June, Blue Origin (Kent, Washington) broke ground on its highly anticipated space launch vehicle manufacturing facility located at Exploration Park near the Kennedy Space Center. The $200 million investment includes the construction of a 750,000 square foot orbital rocket production facility along with improvements to Launch Complex 36, a launch pad currently being leased by the company for future launches. The Haskell Company (Jacksonville, Florida) is attached to the project as design-build, and is currently performing site work. Construction of the manufacturing facility will follow the work at the launch site; completion is expected by December 2017. The engines for the reusable rockets (the BE-4 engine) will be manufactured at the current Kent location, but the company plans to start a site search later this year for a larger production facility for the expected increased production rates.
Additionally, a development formerly known as "Project Sabal" is moving forward near the Blue Origin project in Exploration Park. The company behind the development was recently revealed to be OneWeb Satellites, a joint venture startup of OneWeb Limited (Arlington, Virginia) and Airbus Defence and Space (Toulouse, France), a division of Airbus Group (Leiden, Netherlands). Space Florida, which will build, own and lease the build-to-suit facility, is currently in contract negotiations with a Florida-based general contractor for the facility. This project is expected to generate nearly 300 jobs.
Embraer SA (NYSE:ERJ) (Sao Jose does Campos, Brazil) held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its latest expansion at its jet assembly facility in Melbourne in June. The airplane manufacturer will now build the Legacy 450 and Legacy 500 executive jets alongside the existing Phenom 100 and 300 production lines at the Melbourne facility. The recent expansion included an assembly hangar, a paint facility, a completion center/flight preparation facility and a new delivery center. There are two additional expansions planned for the facility, adding approximately 600 new jobs in the area over the new few years.
Additionally, Embraer started construction late last year on a new 54,000 square foot facility in the Spaceport Commerce Park in Titusville, Florida. This facility will house its newly acquired "Aero Seating Technologies" subsidiary, which manufactures aircraft seats. When completed in the fourth quarter this year, the plant is expected to create 150 jobs.
