Known as the Y-12 National Security Complex, the uranium processing facility was built as part of the Manhattan Project in the 1940s for the purpose of manufacturing the U.S.' first atomic bombs. According to engineering, procurement and construction firm Bechtel Corporation (Reston, Virginia) Y-12's uranium facilities are dated and deteriorating, prompting the National Nuclear Security Administration to launch the project for a "modern facility with a design life of at least 50 years to ensure the long-term viability, safety and security of [nuclear defense] capabilities in the United States." Construction began in 2018 and is expected to be completed in 2025. Other large Industrial Manufacturing projects include General Motors Company's (NYSE:GM) (Detroit, Michigan) expansion of an automotive assembly and engine manufacturing plant in Spring Hill, about 35 miles south of Nashville. Renovations are being performed to the paint and body shop, and new machines are being installed at the assembly works. The project will allow for the production of electric vehicles, including the Cadillac Lyriq SUV. The project is expected to be completed by the end of this year. E-commerce has increased in the U.S. since the COVID-19 pandemic began, so FedEx Corporation's (NYSE:FDX) (Memphis, Tennessee) late-2019 kickoff of the modernization of its World Hub package sorting facility at the Memphis International Airport was well timed. The project is part of a larger modernization project and involves demolishing and/or deconstructing 24 structures and building a four-level, 1.3 million-square-foot sorting facility, including 77,000 square feet of office space. The project is expected to be completed by the end of this year. Subscribers can click here for the project report.
Related projects include Amazon.com Incorporated's (NASDAQ:AMZN) (Seattle, Washington) grassroot warehouse in Mount Juliet and grassroot distribution center in Rockford. The five-story, 3.6 million-square-foot warehouse will include more than 200 truck parking spaces. Subscribers can click here for the project report. The distribution center, known as Project Pearl and located near Knoxville, will encompass more than 630,000 square feet and include 272 trailer parking spaces and 50 shipping and receiving docks. The project is expected to be completed next year. Subscribers can click here for the project report.
The Pulp & Paper Industry also makes a showing in the form of a paper machine conversion in Kingsport by plant owner Domtar Corporation (NYSE:UFS) (Fort Mill, South Carolina). The major conversion of the No. 1 Paper Machine will result in ceasing production of more than 178,000 tons per year of printing paper and beginning production of high-quality recycled linerboard. The project kicked off earlier this year and is expected to last about two years. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Pulp, Paper & Wood Project Database can click here for the project report.
Pet ownership went up in the U.S. with the onset of the pandemic, and pet food plants are springing up throughout the country. In Lebanon, Tennessee, Mars Incorporated subsidiary Royal Canin (Aimargues, France) is underway with a Phase II expansion of its pet food manufacturing facility, which it began in the summer of 2020. The processing facility is being expanded by more than 100,000 square feet. The new production space will house five additional production lines, essentially doubling plant capacity. The facility produces Royal Canin- and Eukanuba-branded dog and cat foods. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Food & Beverage Project Database can click here for the project report.
