Uruguay's UTE Receives Proposals to Add 150 Megawatts of Wind Capacity

Español
Researched by Industrial Info Resources Latin America (Cordoba, Argentina)--Uruguay's state power company Administracion Nacional de Usinas y Transmisiones Electricas (UTE) has extended the deadline to August 23 for a tender to purchase 150 megawatts (MW) of power generated by windfarms.

The call for the submission of bids for proposed windfarms requires that the windfarms must be a minimum of 30 MW and a maximum of 50 MW in generating capacity, with firms invited to submit multiple projects. It is expected that the new wind facilities will be in operation within the next three years.

In a similar call last year, UTE awarded contracts for three 50-MW windfarms to Consorcio Venti, Fingano and Palmatir. Each park will consist of 25 turbines, each with a capacity of 2 MW, and will be constructed in the Maldonado and Tacuarembó departments. These are the Carapé windfarm, the La Libertad windfarm and the Tacuarembó windfarm. The three bids were among 22 submitted by 15 different companies when the tender closed in July 2010.

Uruguay currently has 393 MW of wind capacity in the planning stage, distributed among eight wind parks. German company Sowitec, through its local subsidiary Sowitec Uruguay SA, also has windfarms under development, such as the 51-MW Minas I nd the 42-MW Pastorale windfarm, expected to be operational by 2013.

The tenders form part of the government's drive to have 50% of its total power come from renewable sources, in a country largely based on hydropower generation.

In Uruguay, about 60% of generation capacity is owned and operated by UTE. UTE currently operates the 20-MW Sierra de los Caracoles windfarm n the Maldonado department, which is equipped with Vestas V80 wind turbines and has been operational since October 2008.

The other operational windfarm in Uruguay is the 10-MW Nuevo Manantial windfarm in the Rocha department, owned by Nuevo Manantial SA.
