Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The U.S. recently agreed to lift Trump-era tariffs on solar products from Canada and Mexico, after an independent panel said that the duties violated the provisions of the 2018 Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), and the Great Lakes region may be the first to feel the effects. Industrial Info is tracking more than $3.6 billion worth of active solar-energy projects across the Great Lakes region that are set to begin construction in the current quarter, almost 75% of which is attributed to projects in Ohio and Indiana.

The Great Lakes region includes Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin.

Ohio has seen only two utility-scale solar farms added to its statewide power grid in the past decade, but the Buckeye State leads its region in solar projects set to begin construction over the next three months. This includes two projects in central Ohio from Macquarie Group Limited (Sydney, New South Wales): the $250 million Atlanta Farms facility in Williamsport and the $250 million Madison Fields facility in London, each of which is expected to generate 200 megawatts (MW).

Each will use 600,000 photovoltaic (PV) panels from Jinko Solar (NYSE:JKS) (Shanghai, China). China-based solar-panel manufacturers recently benefited from the Biden administration's implementation of a 24-month break on tariffs for panels being imported from Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia, through which Chinese firms have been routing their products. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Power Project Database can read detailed reports on the Atlanta Farms and Madison Fields projects, and learn more about the Biden administration's decision in the July 5, 2022, article - Are the Administration's Steps Toward Solar Generation the Correct Ones?.

Central Ohio also is home to the single highest-valued solar project set to begin construction in the Great Lakes region this quarter: Geenex Solar's (Charlotte, North Carolina) $695 million Fox Squirrel Solar Farm in London, which is expected to generate 577 MW. Subscribers can learn more from Industrial Info's project report.

Despite offering fewer incentives for solar development than its neighboring states, Ohio is expected to install 4,630 MW of solar over the next five years, according to the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), which puts it in the top 10 U.S. states for solar development over that period.

Indiana is second to Ohio in its total investment value for third-quarter solar kickoffs, but is set to begin construction on what could become the largest solar farm in the U.S., by acreage: Doral Group's (Tel Aviv, Israel) Mammoth Solar Plant in Winamac, the $475 million first phase of which is expected to generate 480 MW from more than 776,000 Jinko PV panels. If approved and built over the next five years, as proposed, Phase II and Phase III would bring the total output to 1 gigawatt (GW) over 13,000 acres. Subscribers can learn more from Industrial Info's project reports on Phase I, Phase II and Phase III.

Illinois and Michigan, both of which offer generous tax incentives for solar development, follow Ohio and Indiana in third-quarter kickoffs. BayWa AG's (Munich, Germany) $300 million Prairie Solar facility in Sidney, Illinois, is set to generate 150 MW from 317,538 PV panels from JA Solar Holdings (Beijing, China), while Greenbacker Renewable Energy Company LLC's (New York, New York) $100 million Heathlands facility in Manistee, Michigan, is set to host a 41-MW solar plant and a 41-MW battery-storage unit. Subscribers can read more in Industrial Info's reports on the Prairie Solar and Heathlands projects.
