Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Metal stamping or pressing is the process of placing flat sheet metal into a stamping press, where a tool and die surface forms the metal into a shape. Stamping includes a variety of sheet metal forming, such as punching, blanking and bending. With the shortage of workers having the required skills to operate presses, many manufacturing companies are providing opportunities to educate and train individuals through a variety of apprenticeship programs.

There are several trends to look out for in 2017 in the U.S. metal stamping industry. One trend is the reshoring and growth in manufacturing in the United States. Many companies are now considering the financial benefits of moving their operations back to the U.S. after decades of outsourcing production and manufacturing due to the border tax and North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) regulations.

A second trend is the rise of solar paneling. Significant price drops for photovoltaic (PV) systems have made solar power much more appealing for metal stamping companies, which can benefit from energy costs savings and federal tax credits associated with switching to solar. PV installations require many kinds of precision machined parts to support the metal panel frames.

A third trend is integrating automation into production. Automation integration benefits manufacturing companies in two ways: higher production rates at lower costs and utilizing advanced equipment, such as laser cutters and robotics, which offer metal stampers unparalleled precision and speed for optimized production.

The metal fabrication market is expected to grow 3% through 2024 according to Transparency Market Research. Industrial Info is tracking $38.58 million in U.S. metal stamping (non-automotive) projects that will be kicking off construction in the next six months.

In Michigan, Variety Die and Stamping Company (Dexter, Michigan) plans to undertake a $3 million expansion beginning late summer 2017 by constructing a 29,381-square-foot building addition. Completion of the expansion is expected in early 2018. Modineer Company Incorporated (Benton Harbor, Michigan) is constructing a $2.8 million metal stamping manufacturing building addition. It consists of a 38,000-square-foot facility plus installation of production lines and equipment. Construction is expected to begin in fall 2017 and be completed in fall 2018. Urgent Design & Manufacturing (Lapeer, Michigan) is planning a $10 million metal stamping building addition, consisting of a 65,000-square-foot addition to the existing plant, plus production lines and equipment. Construction began late summer 2017 and is expected to be completed in fall 2018.

In Illinois, Bethlehem Industries Incorporated (Franklin Park, Illinois) is planning a $2 million metal stamping manufacturing plant renovation to existing buildings. Construction began summer 2017 and is expected to be completed by end of 2017.
