Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Industrial Info is tracking $2.78 in Power Industry projects that are slated to kick off in fourth-quarter 2019 in the U.S. Mid-Atlantic market region, which includes Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia. Because of some large projects, natural gas dominates as a fuel source for project activity in the region, but solar projects are gaining ground rapidly. Virginia, with more than $1 billion in planned activity, leads in terms of project value.

Among the biggest projects set to kick off in the region in the upcoming quarter is NOVI Energy's (Novi, Michigan) planned 1,060-megawatt (MW) combined-cycle facility in Charles City, Virginia. The facility will be constructed on an 88-acre site and will use General Electric (NYSE:GE) equipment. The project is expected to be completed in the summer of 2020. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Energy Solutions Consortium LLC (Herndon, Virginia) also is getting in on the region's natural gas-fired action with construction of a 630-MW combined-cycle facility in Clarksburg, West Virginia. Gemma Power Systems LLC (Glastonbury, Connecticut) is providing engineering, procurement and construction on the project, which has an estimated total investment value (TIV) of $600 million. Construction is expected to be completed in early 2022. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

While grassroot activity usually carries a higher price tag, Duke Energy Corporation (NYSE:DUK) (Charlotte, North Carolina) is taking a different and less expensive track, with the conversion of its Marshall Power Station in North Carolina from coal to gas to improve plant emissions. The four-unit facility has a generating capacity of 2,000 MW and will require six miles of pipeline to feed the plant. The $180 million project is expected to be completed in the first quarter of next year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Solar is definitely the region's renewable fuel of choice, and among the 10 solar projects planned to kick in the region in the quarter is Community Energy Solar's (Radnor, Pennsylvania) Midland solar farm near Orangeburg, South Carolina, about 75 miles northwest of Charleston. The 72.1-MW facility will use Hanwha's (Seoul, South Korea) Q Cell solar panels on a single-axis tracking system. The project has an estimated TIV of $168 million and is expected to be completed next summer. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Several smaller planned solar projects also are being tracked, including Cypress Creek Renewables LLC's (Asheville, North Carolina) McCraw solar farm near Mooresboro, North Carolina. The 20-MW solar farm will use 30,000 to 50,000 Jinko Solar (NYSE:JKS) photovoltaic panels. The project is expected to be completed in the summer of 2020. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

More than $83 million in planned power maintenance projects are planned to kick in the region in the upcoming quarter. In October, Duke Energy plans to begin a 28-day refueling outage at Unit 1 of its Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Station in New Hill, North Carolina. BHI Energy (Weymouth, Massachusetts) is the general contractor on the project, which is planned for completion in early November. Unit 1 has a generating capacity of 930 MW.
