U.S. Mission Looks for Energy and Environment Opportunities in Philippines and Southeast Asia

A U.S. government export briefing said: "Thailand, Malaysia and the Philippines all represent opportunities for U.S. environmental technology firms. Each country has significant issues to deal with, most notably water and wastewater. These countries import most of their water and water treatment equipment, often from U.S. companies. There are also solid-waste and emission-control opportunities in these markets."

At the end of last week, 14 U.S. firms held business-to-business meetings with potential distributors and customers, as well as discussions with Philippine government officials. The U.S. embassy in Manila said that the mission was the largest in recent years to come to Manila to explore partnerships in the energy and environmental sectors.

The Philippines suffers from water-related problems, as 20% to 50% of the population has no access to safe drinking water. In the energy sector, the country depends on gas imports and needs development in the natural gas sector.
