U.S. T&D Builders to End Year with Up to $4 Billion in Kickoffs

Industrial Info is tracking more than $4.3 billion worth of active and proposed T&D projects set to begin construction across the U.S. in the fourth quarter

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The growing need for critical infrastructure to meet rising energy demand and improve resilience across the U.S. has been stressing transmission and distribution (T&D) systems, even in areas not heavily populated. Industrial Info is tracking more than $4.3 billion worth of active and proposed T&D projects set to begin construction across the U.S. in the fourth quarter, about $1.9 billion of which is believed by Industrial Info's researchers to have a high likelihood (81% or more) of kicking off as scheduled.

American Electric Power Company Incorporated (AEP) (Columbus, Ohio) presently accounts for more fourth-quarter T&D kickoffs than any other company, with more than 75% of its $481 million of related investment attributed to Pennsylvania and Ohio. One of its highest-valued projects is the $104 million Bramah Substation in Delta, Pennsylvania, which is being developed to service data centers in the area. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Power Project and Plant databases can learn more from a detailed project report and plant profile.

The Bramah Substation will have plenty of work cut out for it: It is positioned toward the middle of southeastern and southcentral Pennsylvania, two areas that are home to 30 operational data centers and more than $21 billion worth of active and proposed data-center developments. Subscribers to Industrial Info's GMI Project and Plant databases can click here for a list of operational data centers in the area and click here for a list of detailed reports for active and proposed projects.

For years, Texas has faced mounting calls for stronger T&D systems, due to rapid industrial development (including data centers) and disruptive weather. South Texas Electric Cooperative Incorporated (STEC) (Nursery, Texas) is answering the call with a pair of projects in the heart of the Eagle Ford Shale: a $377.7 million line from Christine to Realitos, which will run more than 132 miles, and a $50 million line from Campbellton to Three Rivers, which will run more than 26 miles. Both projects are set to be completed in 2027. Subscribers can read detailed reports on the Christine-Realitos and Campbellton-Three Rivers projects.

Other busy areas in Texas include the suburbs surrounding Houston, where Entergy Corporation (New Orleans, Louisiana) is preparing for a $24.9 million line rebuild within Dayton, running about seven miles. The project is intended to address load loss, which is generated power lost in the distribution from the generator to the consumer. Subscribers can learn more from a detailed project report.

On the East Coast, FirstEnergy Corporation (Akron, Ohio) and regional grid operator PJM Interconnection are developing the multi-phase New Jersey Clean Energy Corridor, which is designed to modernize New Jersey's grid infrastructure and minimize disruptions. Two such projects originate at the Atlantic Substation in Neptune, New Jersey: an upgrade on a line to Howell and an upgrade on a line to Freehold, both of which run about 12 miles.

Subscribers can read detailed reports on the Neptune-Howell and Neptune-Freehold projects, and learn more about the Atlantic Substation in a detailed plant profile.

Amid a slew of projects to modernize the grid for population growth and data-center development, there are more than a few projects that aim to replace T&D systems that are simply too old. One such case is Xcel Energy Incorporated's (Minneapolis, Minnesota) $24 million line from Hopkins to Basalt, Colorado, which will run 11 miles and will replace infrastructure dating back to 1909, according to the company. Xcel plans to supplant single-pole and H-frame structures with steel or fiberglass structures. Subscribers can learn more from a detailed project report.
