Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The U.S. West Coast market region, which includes California, Hawaii, Oregon, Washington and Alaska, has more than $38.2 billion in industrial projects planned to kick off in 2018. The Power Industry, with more than $13.7 billion in planned projects, leads in terms of project value, followed by the Industrial Manufacturing Industry, with $9 billion in planned 2018 project starts.
Click on the image at right for a breakdown by industry of planned 2018 project starts in the U.S. West Coast market region.
Among the largest projects planned to kick off in 2018 is the dismantlement and decommissioning of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) near San Clemente, California. Southern California Edison Company (Rosemead, California) permanently retired the remaining two units of the SONGS facility in 2013 after premature wearing was found on tubes in steam generators that had been replaced in the units in 2010 and 2011 to extend reactor life. The plant generated 2,140 megawatts (MW). The dismantlement/decommissioning process will take several years to complete and has an estimated total investment value of $2.7 billion. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Renewables also play in the region's power projects. In southern California, EDF Renewable Energy (San Diego, California) is in the late planning stage for a photovoltaic solar farm near Desert Center. The facility will have a generating capacity of 250 MW. The project, which has an estimated TIV of $500 million is expected to kick off late next year and be completed in the second quarter of 2020. Aspen Environmental Group (San Francisco, California) is acting as consultant. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
In central California, another solar project is planned to kick off next summer. Recurrent Energy is developing a 195-MW solar project at the naval air station in Lemoore. The project is being constructed on 3,000 acres of the naval station's land and is the first of two proposed phases. The first phase has an estimated TIV of $500 million and will include construction of a substation. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
A commuter rail project tops the list of Industrial Manufacturing projects planned to kick off in the West Coast region in 2018. Sound Transit (Seattle, Washington) plans to kick off an 8.5-mile extension of its Seattle-area North Corridor rail line by developing an 8.5-mile line running along the Interstate 5 corridor from Northgate to the Lynnwood Transit Center. The extension will include four stations. The project, which has an estimated TIV of $1.5 billion, will take about five years to complete. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Two electric vehicle manufacturing plants feature in California's planned manufacturing project starts. Faraday Future (Gardena, California) is developing a $1 billion brownfield electric car manufacturing plant in Hanford, California. The facility will be constructed on a 1 million-square-foot site formerly owned by Pirelli Armstrong Tire Corporation. The facility will be designed to manufacture 10,000 units per year of the four-door, 1,000-horsepower FF91 model electric car. The project is expected to be completed in 2019. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
In Roseville, California, Nikola Motor Company LLC (Salt Lake City, Utah) is in the planning stages for a $1 billion electric truck assembly plant. The facility is planned to manufacture hydrogen fuel cell-powered electric trucks for the U.S. and world markets, eventually reaching 50,000 units per year. The project will take about three years to complete. Robar PR LLC (Detroit, Michigan) is acting as consultant. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
