Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Washington Electric Co-op (Montpelier, Vermont) commenced commercial operation of its new 4.8 megawatt (MW) Coventry Landfill Gas-to-Energy power station on July 1, 2005.
The new power station utilizes waste landfill gases to fuel three Caterpillar internal combustion engines that are capable of generating 1.6MW each.
The new plant was constructed with little or no objections from the small local community and cost an estimated $7 million to construct, including all the planning and engineering costs, transmission lines, generating equipment, and sub-station improvements. Future planning is already being considered for the addition of a fourth generating unit by mid 2006 that will also provide1.6MW's of capacity.
Innovative Energy Systems Incorporated (IES) of Oakfield, New York will operate the station. IES is currently planning similar projects of its own, such as a 4.8MW plant nearly identical to the Coventry station that IES will both own and operate.
