Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland) - Consent for a 32-turbine windfarm in north Wales has been granted by the U.K. government.

U.K. Secretary of State for Energy & Climate Change, Ed Davey, granted permission for the Clocaenog Forest Wind Farm, near Denbigh, North Wales. The project will cost €125 million ($162 million) and will be capable of supplying enough electricity for approximately 41,000 homes. It will have a maximum generating capacity of 96-megawatts (MW).

"This is a tremendous project, which can deliver significant benefits for the local communities, businesses and the environment, and is an important contributor to the U.K. energy mix and energy security," commented RWE npower's Clocaenog project developer, Martin Cole. "We have already started to make inroads into working with the business sector through our supply chain events, to ensure local companies are well placed to bid for contracts when they emerge. We will build on this locally and with other business organisations over time. We are also keen to step up our work with communities to maximise the significant community benefit fund of £768,000 a year. With our neighbouring sister project Gwynt y Môr, that means RWE Innogy UK will be putting an extra £1.5 million a year into North Wales communities."

Clocaenog Forest is RWE's fifth windfarm proposal in Wales to receive the green light since the start of last year. They have a combined generating capacity of 281 MW.

At the end of last year, RWE received permission for the Brechfa Forest East Windfarm, a 36 MW development involving 12 turbines with a total generating of 36 MW. It will be capable of powering almost 16,000 homes. The U.K. Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) granted permission to the larger sister project, Brechfa Forest West in March 2013. This is a 28 turbine scheme, with an installed capacity of up to 84 MW, capable of generating energy for around 39,700 homes.
