Weyerhaeuser to Build Fiber Cellulosic Plant in Poland

Construction is scheduled to start after Weyerhaeuser has selected contractors and equipment suppliers later this year.

Cellulose fibers have many applications, from books and textiles, to bandages and ice cream. The fibers can mimic plastic once hardened and can be used to make athletic helmets and toys . Weyerhaeuser is also making tracks in the renewable energy sector. Currently, the company is planning to invest in the biomass-to-energy market utilizing cellulosic fibers and byproducts from forest management.

Weyerhaeuser is planning to begin construction at the Maszynowa Industry & Technology Park in Gdansk, which is about 300 kilometers north of Warsaw on the Baltic Sea. The company plans to invest $100 million in the project to first build a 17,000-square-meter facility and install processing equipment, production equipment and associated systems to produce cellulosic fiber for use in viscose rayon applications.
