Wind, Solar Lead Texas in More than $3.4 Billion in Planned Second-Quarter Power Project Starts
Industrial Info is tracking $3.45 billion in projects that are planned to kick off in second-quarter 2020 in Texas' Power Industry.
Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Industrial Info is tracking $3.45 billion in projects that are planned to kick off in second-quarter 2020 in Texas' Power Industry. The project starts are dominated by wind and solar power, which each account for more than $1.6 billion in planned spending.
Among the largest power projects planned to kick off in the state in the upcoming quarter is Intersect Power's (San Francisco, California) 375-megawatt (MW) Titan photovoltaic solar plant in Van Horn, in West Texas, about 120 miles southeast of El Paso. The facility will use First Solar Incorporated's (NASDAQ:FSLR) (Tempe, Arizona) Series 6 thin-film photovoltaic solar modules. The project is set to begin early in the quarter and is expected to wrap up by the end of 2021. Signal Energy Constructors (Chattanooga, Tennessee) is providing engineering, procurement and construction services. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report. The facility will be accompanied by Intersect's nearby 250-MW Aragorn solar plant, which is set to kick off construction this summer and be completed in third-quarter 2021. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report. The facilities have a combined total investment value (TIV) of $995 million.
Elsewhere in the state, other solar projects that could potentially start construction in the upcoming quarter include Belltown Power Texas' (Farmers Branch, Texas) Coniglio solar power plant in Wolfe City, about 70 miles northwest of Dallas. The facility would feature more than 284,400 solar panels to generate 135 MW. Once started, the project is expected to take about a year to complete. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
On the wind energy front, one of the largest projects planned to kick off is BayWa AG's (Munich, Germany) WKN Amadeus Windfarm, near Clairemont, about 80 miles southeast of Lubbock. The 249-MW facility will feature 89 2.8-MW wind turbines. Construction is set to begin early in the quarter and be completed by the end of this year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Other upcoming wind projects include EDF Renewables North America's (San Diego, California) repower project at the Sherbino Mesa II Windfarm in Fort Stockton. The project entails replacing 60 vintage Clipper Windpower turbines with 68 Vestas 2.2-MW turbines to generate 149.6 MW. Vestas American Wind Technology Incorporated (Portland, Oregon) is the design-build firm on the project, which is expected to be completed in fourth-quarter 2020. The project has an estimated total investment value of $260 million. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
While not nearly as high in overall project value, Industrial Info also is tracking more than 20 planned maintenance projects at Texas power facilities that are planned to kick off in the second quarter. In New Braunfels, Texas, Calpine Corporation (Houston, Texas) will perform a maintenance outage to its 371-MW Unit 1 at the Guadalupe Generating Station. The project is expected to start next month and be completed in early May. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report. Several other natural gas-fired maintenance projects are in the works. Click here for a list.
