Windlab Appoints Major Contractor to Build Coonooer Windfarm in Victoria

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Perth, Australia)--The 18-megawatt (MW) Coonooer windfarm in Victoria has moved a step closer after a major contractor agreement was signed between Windlab Systems Pty Limited (Barton, Australia) and Alstom Australia Pty Limited (New South Wales, Australia).

The Coonoer windfarm in North West Bendigo will consist of six wind turbines with a total output of 18 MW. It is jointly owned by Windlab Systems, an Australian-owned renewable energy company, and landholders who neighbour the project. Based on Windlab's analysis, the project will create roughly 20 local jobs and supply about 10,900 homes with electricity.

The planning permits were submitted in June 2013, and the project received approval from the Planning Assessment Commission, as well as state and federal government permits, by the end of 2013. This is the only windfarm that has been approved in Victoria in the last two years, mainly due to strong support from the local council.

The windfarm has yet to secure full-level funding approvals and needs a commercial agreement for power purchase. According to Project Manager Matthew Parton, Windlab expects to commence construction on the project perhaps toward the third quarter of this year. The project also includes upgrades to the existing substation on the site and construction of a new, 20-kilometre transmission line to connect to the grid. Windlab is working with Powercor to construct this portion of the project.

Windlab has a number of windfarms under development across the world, with a portfolio of projects that totals more than 7,000 MW. Windlab is also working on the 700-MW Kennedy windfarm and Hughenden renewable energy project, which have a combined capacity of 900 to 1,000 MW in Townsville, Queensland. Both projects will connect to the Copper String 330-kilovolt powerlines, which connect the mining region of Mount Isa with Australia's National Electricity Grid.
