WISCO's Blast Furnace Slag Cement Project Begins Operation

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--WISCO Metal Resources Company Limited's (Wuhan, Hubei) blast furnace slag cement project was successfully commissioned and put into operation on December 31, Wuhan Iron and Steel Corporation Limited (SHA: 600005) (WISCO) (Wuhan, Hubei), announced on January 5.

WISCO's blast furnace slag cement project, occupying an area of about 3 hectares in WISCO's plant area in the Qingshan District, Wuhan City, is jointly invested by WISCO and Engro Corporation (Singapore) with a total investment of about $27 million. The project is designed to produce 1.2 million metric tons (MMT) per year of slag powder cement by using the waste produced from the steel manufacturing process of WISCO as raw material. By turning the blast furnace slag into a green building material, the project will greatly improve the value add-ons of blast furnace slag.

As reported, the blast furnace slag cement project is mainly comprised of a vertical grinding mill, gas furnaces, dust removers, belt conveyors and associated common and auxiliary facilities such as the warehouse for finished product. Construction of the project officially began in May 2011. When the project is completed, it will be able to use 1.38 MMT of slag, reduce the emission of about 0.96 MMT of carbon dioxide, 534 metric tons of soot and 273 metric tons of sulfur dioxide per year. As a typical cyclic economic project, the project is satisfactory with the nation's requirements on resources conservation and environmental protection. The project gained full affirmation from the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and received a bonus of 10 million Chinese yuan (about $1.56 million) for resource conservation and environment protection. In addition, the project also has sound economic and social benefits.

According to the planning, WISCO will focus more on its non-steel related industries and will to increase the proportion of its non-steel related industries from the current 8% to 30% by the end of the 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-15).
