Xiluodu Hydropower Station Begins Operations at 10th 770-Megawatt Unit

Researched by Industrial Info Resources China (Beijing, China)--Unit 7, the 10th 770-megawatt (MW) unit at the Xiluodu Hydropower Station, passed the 168-hour, continuous, full-load trial operation and began commercial operations on November 25, 2013. More than half of the units at the Xiluodu Hydropower Station, which is the second-largest hydropower station in China, have begun operations, according to an announcement from the project owner, China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG) (Beijing), on November 27.

The unit was manufactured by Voith Hydropower Equipment Shanghai Company Limited (VHS) (Shanghai) and constructed by Gezhouba Mechanical & Electrical Engineering Group Company Limited (Yichang, Hubei).

The commissioning of the unit was then carried out, with all tests completed as scheduled. Test results show that the unit has normal mechanical and electrical indicators. The 72-hour trial operation began on November 22, 2013. During the trial operation, various technical indicators were rated at a sound level. The commissioning headquarters of Xiluodu Left Bank Powerhouse decided to put the unit into commercial operations upon the completion of the trial operation on November 25.

The Xiluodu Hydropower Project, located at the boundary between Leibo County of the Sichuan province and Yongshan County of the Yunnan province, is the second huge hydropower project developed by CTG on the Changjiang River. The project mainly comprises a 278-meter-high, concrete, double curvature-arch dam; the spillway; the power diversion works; and the two underground powerhouses located at both banks. It has a total planned capacity of 13.86 GW, including 18 huge hydraulic turbine generating units of 770 MW each.

The left-bank underground powerhouse and the right-bank underground powerhouse each are furnished with nine units. Units 1 to 6 at the Left Bank Powerhouse are supplied by Harbin Electric Corporation (Harbin, Heilongjiang); units 7 to 9 at the Left Bank Powerhouse are supplied by VHS. Units 10 to 18 at the Right Bank Powerhouse are supplied by Dongfang Electric Corporation (Chengdu, Sichuan).
