Yogurt Manufacturer to Commence Construction on $32 Million Facility

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Commonwealth Dairy LLC (Brattleboro, Vermont) plans to start construction in the next two to three weeks on a new yogurt manufacturing plant in Brattleboro, Vermont. Commonwealth is investing $32 million in the facility to produce yogurt for other companies under private-label and co-pack arrangements. The company will also produce and sell its own brands. The new facility is scheduled to be fully operational by the end of this year or early 2011 and will serve regional markets.

Commonwealth is constructing a 39,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art, LEED compliant, Class II dairy-processing facility that includes alternative energy sources and will be designed to accept up to 50 million pounds per year of milk from the open market, as well as segregated milk streams.

Shambaugh & Sons LP (Fort Wayne, Indiana) has design-build responsibilities for the project and will perform and subcontract portions of the building construction and equipment installation.

The yogurt market represents approximately $4 billion in annual sales. Private label and in-store brands account for 12% to 13% of total revenues.
