Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Work is about to conclude at the 885-megawatt (MW) Langage combined-cycle power station. Centrica Energy (Windsor, England), a subsidiary of Centrica plc (OTC:CPYYY) (Windsor) and owner of British Gas, began construction on the plant in late 2006 and expects to start full commercial operation in March this year, a spokesman from the company told Industrial Info.
The facility, located near Plymouth in southwest England, will consist of two Alstom GT26 gas turbines with one STF30C steam turbine, two once-through heat recovery steam generators, three TOPAIR generators, and a large air-cooled condenser, with a total power output of 885 MW. In 2006 France's Alstom (EPA:ALO) (Levallois-Perret, France) was awarded the long-term operation support and maintenance responsibility for this new plant.
The plant, which has been producing electricity since September 2009 in its commissioning phase, will be one of the most modern and efficient power stations in the world. Considering the fact that gas is the cleanest fossil fuel available for power generation, Langage will meet the stringent environmental criteria set by the European Union, with low levels of NOx and CO2 emissions. The plant has been designed to blend in with the surroundings and will be smaller in size, height and area than similar power plants.
