Researched by Industrial Info Resources Australia (Perth, Australia)--With a $19 billion budget, the Papua New Guinea Liquefied Natural Gas Project (PNG LNG) is the largest project in Papua New Guinea. Esso Highlands, a subsidiary of ExxonMobil (NYSE:XOM) (Irving, Texas) will operate the project on behalf of the joint venture members, including Oil Search Limited (ASX:OSH) (Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea) and Santos Limited (ASX:STO) (Adelaide, Australia).
The PNG LNG project is on track for first LNG in 2014. With a workforce of nearly 20,000 people, the project is more than 80% complete. Upon completion, it will have a capacity of 6.9 million tonnes per annum of LNG.
The project draws from wells in the Southern Highlands, Hela and the Western Provinces of Papua, New Guinea, and requires the construction of more than 400 miles (700 kilometres) of transmission pipelines.
Gas from the Hides wellheads will be processed at the Hides Gas Conditioning Plant, alongside gas and condensate from the Juha wellheads. From that point, the condensate will be transferred to the existing Kutubu Central Processing Facility via a 64-mile (104-kilometre), 8-inch pipeline. Here, the condensate will be exported via the existing crude oil pipeline to the Kumul Marine Terminal. The gas will be transferred via onshore pipeline to the Gulf of Papua, and then via a 250-mile (407-kilometre), 34-inch subsea gas pipeline to the LNG facility at Caution Bay, northwest of capital city Port Moresby.
As of May 2013, the offshore pipeline is complete and the onshore pipeline is progressing on schedule. The Komo airfield is complete; this is a key component of the project, because of the distance between the LNG facility and the gas fields, and because the rugged terrain of the region would hinder road transport. The first cargo flights are expected to commence later this month.
Foundations at the Hides Gas Conditioning Plant are complete, with cable installation and piping under way. The LNG tanks, load-out jetty and flare system are nearing completion.
The project has been designed to accommodate possible future expansion. Expansion plans are already being investigated, with potential areas for drilling being developed. Plans are under way to drill Hides Deep in 2014.
