Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--While no one is exactly sure what the coming months will bring in regard to the U.S. industrial sector, a certain number of projects will move forward as planned, although exactly which ones these will be continues to be closely monitored by Industrial Info. The U.S. government recently published a list of critical infrastructure workers that it says should work through the COVID-19 pandemic, several sectors of which fall under the Industrial Manufacturing Industry.

Industrial Info is tracking nearly $2 billion in Industrial Manufacturing projects planned to kick off in the U.S. Southeast market region from April through June this year. The Southeast region includes Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Tennessee, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Among the sectors identified by the government as an essential industry (click here for the full list) is Information Technology. While already heading in this direction, the U.S. has now become even more online-oriented, performing everything from grocery shopping to an increased number of financial transactions online. Data center operator CyrusOne LLC (Dallas, Texas) plans to construct a 146,000-square-foot building featuring 16.7 megawatts (MW) of critical load power to provide enhanced data colocation services in Douglasville, Georgia, about 20 miles west of Atlanta. The project was expected to be completed by the end of this year. Industrial Info will continue monitoring this and other data center projects as changes are made to construction schedules. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

One of the sectors that is expected to be particularly hard-hit by the COVID-19 pandemic is the automotive sector. Automotive analytics firm J.D. Power (Troy, Michigan) said that the coronavirus could prevent up to 3 million vehicles sales in the U.S. this year and that sales are likely to be between 14 million and 16 million vehicles, compared with an earlier estimate of 16.8 million. Among the automotive sector projects planned to kick off in the Southeast region in the upcoming quarter is Hankook Tire America Corporation's (Clarksville, Tennessee) Phase II construction on a high-end performance radial tire manufacturing plant in Clarksville. Upon completion, the plant would produce an estimated 5.5 million tires annually. The project entails doubling the size of the facility by constructing a 750,000-square-foot building addition to provide tires for select Toyota Camry and Honda Accord models. The project was expected to be completed in late 2021. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Among the other industries considered essential in the government's recent report was the Transportation Systems sector, which leads the region in upcoming Industrial Manufacturing project value, thanks to several planned projects at ports in Florida, although some of these involve cruise ship terminals, an industry has been hammered since the virus outbreak. Container shipments have also slowed at many of the nation's ports. Among the projects not involving cruise ships is Jacksonville Port Authority's (Jacksonville, Florida) expansion of the Blount Island Terminal in Jacksonville. The $238.7 million project entails developing a new container terminal to increase space to 80 acres and performing facility upgrades to allow two post-Panamax vessels to use the terminal at the same time. In addition, three 100-guage container cranes will be installed. The project was planned for completion by the end of 2021. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

How other, more traditional manufacturing projects will be affected remains to be seen. CC1 Incorporated (Coral Gables, Florida) is planning to begin Phase I construction on a grassroot aluminum can manufacturing plant in Winter Haven, Florida. The project is the first phase of a $120 million development for an aluminum can manufacturing plant to supply to supply the beverage industry. Construction is planned to be completed in the second half of 2021. Roeslein & Associates Incorporated (Saint Louis, Missouri) is the design-build firm. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
