Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Mexican President Manuel Lopez Obrador recently made two announcements regarding the development of new wind and solar capacity to be installed in the northern and southern parts of the country. In both cases, the projects would be developed and operated by state-owned utility Comision Federal de Electricidad (CFE); financial aid is being sought from the U.S. government and banking institutions.
On February 2, the "Sonora Clean Energy Plan" was presented to a group of more than 60 foreign ambassadors and Mexican authorities. The plan includes the construction of five 1-gigawatt (GW) solar photovoltaic plants, as well as large investments for lithium extraction and processing plants, natural gas liquefaction, electric car manufacturing plants and ports infrastructure.
The event took place on the construction site of the 1-GW Puerto Peñasco solar photovoltaic project in the northern state of Sonora. When fully constructed in 2028, the Puerto Peñasco project also will include 192 megawatts (MW) of battery energy storage system (BESS) capacity plus four new substations and almost 650 kilometers of new transmission lines to support the proposed capacity in the Sonora Plan and connect the isolated state of Baja California to the national grid.
The Sonora Clean Energy Plan includes four other 1-GW solar plants in Sonora, to be constructed in San Luis Rio Colorado, Caborca, Fundición and Navojoa.

A second announcement was made by López Obrador on February 8. Under the "Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec" (CIIT) infrastructure project, four of 10 proposed industrial parks would be used for the construction of new wind farms in the Yucatan Peninsula. A formal presentation of the plan is expected to take place on March 19 before a group of visiting U.S. Congress members.
