Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland)--Swedish energy company, Vattenfall and Germany utility Stadtwerke München (Munich, Germany) have committed to spending 1.2 billion ($1.6 billion) to construct their second offshore windfarm in the German North Sea.
The companies have made a final investment decision to go ahead with the construction of the Sandbank windfarm, which will have a generating capacity of 288 megawatts (MW). Each year it will produce an estimated 1.4 terawatt hours (TWh) of renewable electricity, enough to power approximately 400,000 households.
It will also play a key role in developing Germany's developing offshore wind sector. Earlier this week, Industrial Info reported that the construction of the first phase of the Borkum West II windfarm in the German North Sea was completed by Trianel Windfraftwerk Borkum (TWB), part of Trianel Energie GmbH (Aachen, Germany) ,a joint venture owned by a number of German banks and electrical utilities. The windfarm has a generating capacity of 200 MW. For additional information, see August 11, 2014, article--North Sea Borkum West II Windfarm Finished.
The 50:50 Sandbank windfarm will be built northwest of DanTysk, Vattenfall and Stadtwerke München's first joint windfarm, which is expected to be commissioned early next year. Like Sandbank, it will have a generating capacity of 288 MW. Construction of Sandbank is expected to begin in summer 2015 and will use 72 Siemens SWT-4.0-130 model turbines, rated at 4 MW each. The project is located 110-kilometers (km) from the German coast and the turbines will stand in water depths ranging from 24-33 meters.
"The Sandbank project is further testament to Vattenfall's strategy of consistently focusing our growth efforts on the expansion of renewable energy," stated Gunnar Groebler, head of the Renewables Business Unit for Vattenfall's Continental/UK region. "We know how to work offshore and we see it as a significant building block in the success of the energy transition [Energiewende] in Germany."
Markus Tacke, chief executive officer of Siemens Energy's Wind Power Division, added: "We are very pleased to be joining forces and pooling our shared experience again with Vattenfall to implement another major offshore project. Sandbank will boldly demonstrate just how far we've come in reducing the costs of offshore wind power."
Siemens has been contracted to provide service and maintenance for the first five years.
