Zilkha Biomass Energy Nears Completion of Alabama Pellet Mill Retrofit

The Selma facility will have a capacity of 275,000 tons per year. The project began earlier this year, and is scheduled for commissioning in the near future. All of the major pieces of equipment have been installed and are ready for production.

The estimated $18 million retrofit of the former Dixie Pellets mill is being performed by general contractor W.G. Yates & Sons Construction Company (Birmingham, Alabama). Zilkha also used a software platform that was developed by Aconex (San Bruno, California), which manages information and processes between companies throughout the lifecycle of construction and engineering projects.

The Selma mill will be the second such facility for Zilkha. The first plant, located in Crockett, Texas, has been in operation since July 2010, and produces at least 40,000 tons per year of black waterproof pellets.

The company has two more pellet mill projects in the works. The next plant would be located in Monticello, Arkansas. When permitting is approved, construction could begin as early as March 2015. The plant has a planned capacity of 275,000 tons per year of fuel pellets.

The other plant would be located in Jackson, Alabama. This plant will have the capacity of producing 480,000 to 500,000 tons per year. Construction is slated to start in early to mid-2015.

When all mills reach capacity, Zilkha will have the capacity to produce more than 1 billion tons per year of fuel pellets that are destined for European markets.
