Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--NextEra Energy Incorporated (NYSE:NEE) (Juno Beach, Florida) is adding more wind-harnessed power to the grid from the central plains of Kansas. Located in Pratt County, the Ninnescah Wind Energy Center began commercial operation earlier this month.
Starting last spring, wind turbine components were moved about 150 miles from Garden City, Kansas, to Pratt County. Blattner Energy Incorporated (Avon, Minnesota) was the engineering, procurement and construction firm for the project and was responsible for transporting the wind turbine components. An estimated 450 trucks were needed to move the towers and blades. Construction began in March.
Wind Composite Services Group LLC (Houston, Texas) won a contract to repair any blades damaged through the duration of construction.
The Ninnescah Wind Energy Center will generate 200 megawatts. It uses 100 GE wind turbines. Westar Energy Incorporated (NYSE:WR) (Topeka, Kansas) is buying the electricity through a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA).
