Alabama is leading all states with $4.2 billion total investment value (TIV) for 35 major capital and maintenance projects. The large TIV for Alabama in 2007 can be attributed predominately to the new $3.7 billion steel mill complex that ThyssenKrupp is planning to begin construction late this year near Mobile. However, spending in the state is high even without the ThyssenKrupp project, as an additional 34 projects with a TIV exceeding $500 million are scheduled.

After Alabama comes Minnesota, Ohio and Indiana each with more than $1 billion in project spending.

The largest Metals & Minerals Industry project to begin construction so far this year is a $262 million cement plant expansion for Buzzi Unicem USA in Festus, Missouri. Once complete, the expansion will replace two existing long dry kilns with a new technology 5-stage preheater/precalciner kiln that will produce 2.3 million tons per year of cement. Even with this project, Missouri did not make the Top 10 states list this year; however, industrial companies are developing more than $440 million planned from 17 projects in the state. The state with least TIV on the list is Michigan with $740 million planned.
