Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Galp Energia Group (Lisboa, Portugal) has selected engineering companies to perform front-end engineering design for two refinery conversion projects at its Sines and Porto refineries. Galp Energia has chosen Fluor Corporation (NYSE: FLR) (Irving, Texas) to perform design work at the Portugal refinery. The project will be handled from their Fluor offices in Madrid, Spain, and Camberley, England. Initec Tecnicas Reunidas will be responsible for the work at the Sines refinery. The conversion projects are planned to begin construction late 2008 or early 2009 with completion scheduled in 2010. Galp Energia plans to select an engineering and construction firm to perform engineering, procurement and construction services for the projects by mid-2008.

The conversion projects at the refineries will total $1.7 billion and are aimed to increase diesel production by 2.5 million tons per year. The Sines refinery will include the construction of a 43,000-barrel-per-day (BBL/d) hydrocracker utilizing Chevron technology, sulfur recovery unit, hydrogen plant, deisobutanizer and LPG splitter. In addition, Galp is looking to perform revamps to existing crude and vacuum unit, visbreaker unit, fluid catalytic cracker unit, off-sites and utilities. The Portugal refinery will involve the construction of a 54,000 BBL/d vacuum unit, 27,000 BBL/d diesel hydrodesulfurization unit, visbreaker unit, sulfur recovery unit and off-site utilities.

Galp Energia Group is a Portuguese corporation that was founded April 1999. The company was formed as a result of the restructuring of the energy sector to operate in the oil and natural gas businesses. The company has activities in exploration and production, refining and marketing, natural gas supply and distribution, and power. The two refineries in Portugal represent 100% of the Portuguese refining capacity. In addition, the refineries represent 20% of Iberian refined products capacity.
