Newmont Mining Leads Rocky Mountain Region Metal and Mineral Sector Planned $633 Million in Capital Projects Scheduled to Begin Construction in 2004

Industrial metal and mineral plants in the Rocky Mountain Region of the U.S. are planning 23 major capital and maintenance projects scheduled to kick-off construction in 2004. The 23 projects represent capital spending of $633 million.
One of the larger projects planned in the metals and minerals sector in the region is the $189 million Pheonix Gold Mine expansion (PEC 48000052) at Newmont Mining Corporation's (NYSE:NEM)(Denver, Colorado) Battle Mountain Gold mine in Nevada. Newmont is also beginning construction on its Leeville underground gold project (PEC 48000203)located in Carlin, Nevada. The $180 million project will perform major construction activities throughout 2004 with production to begin in 2006.
