Ashta Chemicals Incorporated (Ashtabula, Ohio) is preparing to spend a large portion of its 2005 capital budget toward reducing mercury emissions at an existing potassium carbonate and chlorine production plant located in Ashtabula, Ohio. Part of Ashta Chemicals' plan includes the reduction of mercury emissions in the chlorine production area, through process changes and the installation of additional monitoring equipment.
The Ashtabula plant was built in the early 1960's and is estimated to produce approximately 44,000 metric ton per year of chlorine, 30,000 tons per year of potassium carbonate, 70,000 tons per year potassium hydroxide, as well as some pesticide products as well.
