Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Info Resources; Houston, Texas). Alabama Power Company (Birmingham, Alabama), a subsidiary of the nation’s largest producers of electricity, Southern Company (NYSE:SO) (Atlanta, Georgia), is projected to invest up to $1.5 billion in the next few years to dramatically reduce air emissions, plus perform repairs and upgrades at its coal and nuclear plants to extend reliability.

A $120 million SCR unit is scheduled for completion this spring on the 952-megawatt Unit #5, at the five-unit Earnest C Gaston Power Station (Wilsonville, Alabama). The system will be tied-in to a coal B&W tangential-fired dry bottom supercritical boiler. The selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system, the most effective line of defense against excessive NOx emissions, is most commonly used at power plants, along with the less costly selective non-catalytic reduction (SNCR).

Major overhaul and SNCR tie-ins are also scheduled on two 272-megawatt Units #1 and #2 this fall that involve two B&W opposed-fired boiler and General Electric cross-compound turbine/generator sets. A SNCR unit will also be installed onto the 244-megawatt Unit #4 B&W dry bottom opposed-fired boiler in the first quarter of 2007.

Preliminary design is also being conducted at the Gaston plant for a $300 million flue gas desulfurization (FGD) scrubber scheduled for 2009.

A $14 million SNCR tie-in is ending this month on the 403-megawatt Unit #4 Alstom Combustion Engineering tangential-fired dry bottom boiler at the Barry Power Station (Bucks, Alabama). A 30-day outage will follow on the 788-megawatt Unit #5 General Electric turbine/generator with Alstom supercritical dry bottom boiler. A $70 million SCR system and a $120 million wet scrubber are also scheduled for installation on this unit in 2008.

A scrubber project expected to cost about $400 million is being designed at the biggest plant in the Southern Company system, the 2,640-megawatt James H Miller Power Station (Quinton, Alabama), with completion by December 2008.

An overhaul is being prepared for the 299-megawatt Unit #1 this spring at the Greene County Power Station (Demopolis, Alabama). The four-week outage includes a coal/oil B&W opposed-fired dry bottom boiler with a General Electric turbine/generator set. A $180 million scrubber addition is being planned for 2014.

Mechanical construction is kicking off this spring on a $200 million wet scrubber project on Units #8, #9, and #10 at the William Crawford Gorgas Power Station (Parrish, Alabama). Advatech LLC (Chattanooga, Tennessee), a joint venture between URS Corporation (NYSE:URS) (San Francisco, California) and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (Tokyo, Japan), is performing the task of designing and building, with completion expected in the fall of 2008.

Preparation is being conducted for an upcoming 40-day, $10 million refueling outage on the 888-megawatt Unit #1 Westinghouse pressurized-water-reactor (PWR) at the Joseph M Farley Nuclear Station (Columbia, Alabama). The identical Unit #2 will be refueled in the spring of 2007.
