Gulf Coast of Texas and Louisiana Becoming an Attractive Area for Wind Energy Developers

The Louisiana projects will be centered around existing abandoned oil and gas rigs on the Gulf Coast.

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). The Gulf of Mexico is a gold mine for companies looking at offshore wind power development. Projects that would produce a total of 550-600 megawatts are being developed off the coast of Louisiana, and 760-900 megawatts off the coast of Texas.

The projects in Louisiana are multiple 50-megawatt (MW) wind farms that are being developed by Grand Vent Wind Energy Systems Technologies, LLC, a subsidiary of Herman J. Schellstede & Associates, Incorporated (New Iberia, Louisiana). The Louisiana projects will be centered around existing abandoned oil and gas rigs on the Gulf Coast.

Galveston-Offshore Wind, LLC, a division of Wind Energy Technologies, LLC (W.E.S.T. LLC), another Schellstede subsidiary, also has signed a lease for 11,355 acres seven miles off the coast with the Texas General Land Office to build a 190 MW to 250 MW wind farm. The Port of Galveston is studying a site near Pelican Island. If this project moves forward, it could produce 10 to 150 megawatts. Superior Renewable Energy, LLC (Houston, Texas) has also signed a lease with the Texas General Land Commission for 40,000 acres off Padre Island in Kenedy County. The Padre Island project is being looked at in multiple phases with the first phase adding 250 megawatts.
