Gonnella Breaks Ground on New Frozen Dough Plant in Pennsylvania

The company purchased seventeen acres of land near Route 924 in the Humboldt Industrial Park in Hazleton and plans to construct a 100,000 square-foot production building and distribution warehouse

Reported by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Family-owned and operated Gonnella Baking Company (Chicago, Illinois) and wholly-owned subsidiary Gonnella Frozen Products, Incorporated (Schaumburg, Illinois) have broken ground and begun preliminary site work, pulling trees and removing rock debris for construction, on a new frozen dough plant and distribution center that will be located in Hazleton, Pennsylvania.

The company purchased seventeen acres of land near Route 924 in the Humboldt Industrial Park in Hazleton and plans to construct a 100,000 square-foot production building and distribution warehouse to better serve a growing customer base located in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions.

Food Tech Structures (Hanover, Massachusetts) has been selected as the design-build contractor for this estimated $20 million project. Plans are to have site work completed in time to pour the building foundation by October so work can continue inside the building when inclement weather begins to set in.

Plans call for the installation of multiple production and packaging lines plus freezing and cold storage areas to produce the company’s line of frozen rolls, breads, and sliced breads.

Construction is expected to take nine to ten months to complete. Once the plant becomes fully operational, approximately 72 new jobs will be created. Gonnella Baking Company is a baker of Italian and French style bread operating primarily in the Chicago area. From fresh bread to frozen dough, Gonnella sells to retailers and restaurants alike through both regional and national distribution. A privately-owned family company, Gonnella has built a loyal following in its over 110-year history. It has been ranked as one of the nation's top 100 bakeries and produces nearly 1.5 million pounds of bread products per week. Besides Italian bread, the company also makes frozen dough, fresh frozen baked bread, buns, rolls, breadsticks, and breadcrumbs.
