Coal Plants in India May Miss Emission-Norms Compliance Deadline, and Industrial Info Market Brief

In fulfilling its pledge to the Paris Climate Accord, the Indian government has introduced stringent new standards to regulate nitrogen oxide (NOX), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and particulate matter emissions from coal-fired power plants. However, most power plants likely will miss the revised deadlines for complying with the stricter air-pollution emission norms. The initial deadline for power stations to adhere to the new NOX and SO2 norms was December 2017, but 400 power plants that were to be retrofitted with modern flue-gas desulfurization (FGD) units, electrostatic precipitators (ESP), selective catalytic reduction (SCR) or selective non-catalytic reduction (SNCR) equipment failed to meet the revised standards.
