Researched by Industrial Info Resources Latin America (Cordoba, Argentina)--Petrobras (NYSE:PBR) (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), Brazil's national petroleum company, awarded the turn-key contract for the construction of its new fertilizers complex in Uberaba, Triunfo, in Rio Grande do Sul state, to joint venture Toyo-Setal Engenharia (Sao Paulo, Brazil). The venture was formed by Sog Oleo e Gas S.A. (Rio de Janeiro) and Toyo Engineering Corporation (Tokyo, Japan).

The Uberaba fertilizers plant, also known as Nitrogenous Fertilizers Unit 5 (UFN 5), will consist of an ammonia unit with a 1,500-metric-ton-per-year production capacity, with its necessary offsite utilities. The plant will use technology provided by licensor KBR Incorporated (NYSE:KBR) (Houston, Texas), which also will continue working with Toyo-Setal to complete the preliminary engineering for the ammonia plant. The detailed engineering will be in the hands of Toyo Engineering, from its office in India.

When the preliminary engineering is complete, Toyo-Setal will start building access roads and infrastructure. Structural erection will kick off in the last quarter of this year, and it is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2016.

Together with the UFN 5, Petrobras is executing two major investment projects that are aimed at expanding its fertilizers production capacity. The first one is the UFN 3, in Tres Lagoas, Mato Grosso do Sul. Its construction is being executed by a consortium formed by Sinopec Brasil (Rio de Janeiro) and Galvao Engenharia (Sao Paulo), and the plant is to be operational in the third quarter of this year.

The second complex, called UFN 4, is in Linhares, Espirito Santo. Petrobras has selected Foster Wheeler (NASDAQ:FWLT) (Zug, Switzerland) to complete the front end engineering design (FEED) through the last quarter of 2014, so as to select an engineering, performance and construction (EPC) contractor and begin construction in the second quarter of 2016, with completion in early 2018.
