Petrobras kicked off construction of the Uberaba fertilizers plant, also known as Nitrogenous Fertilizers Unit 5 (UFN 5), in September. The unit will have a 1,500-tonne-per-year ammonia production capacity. Utilities will be located offsite. The grassroot project has a total investment value of $300 million.

Petrobras awarded the turn-key contract for the construction of the new complex at the start of 2014 to Toyo-Setal Engenharia (Sao Paulo, Brazil), a joint venture formed by Sog Oleo e Gas S.A. (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Toyo Engineering Corporation (Tokyo, Japan). The preliminary engineering for the ammonia plant was performed by KBR Incorporated (NYSE:KBR) (Houston, Texas) and Toyo-Setal. Toyo Engineering's India office performed the detailed engineering. Production is scheduled to begin by the end of 2016.

Petrobras is also developing two other major fertilizer projects. The UFN 3, located in Tres Lagoas, Mato Grosso do Sul, is being built by a consortium that includes Sinopec Brasil (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Galvao Engenharia (Sao Paulo, Brazil). The unit is expected to begin urea and ammonia production in first-quarter 2015. Industrial Info is tracking Tres Lagoas projects with a combined value of $900 million.

The UFN 4 project is located in Linhares, Espirito Santo. Petrobras picked Foster Wheeler (NASDAQ:FWLT) (Zug, Switzerland) and Air Liquide (Paris, France) to complete the front end engineering design (FEED). Processing is scheduled to start at the beginning of 2018, but setbacks have caused Petrobras to evaluate whether to reconfigure the project and its scope, which in turn could impact the project schedule. Industrial Info is tracking two Linhares projects with a total value of $700 million.
