AES Dominicana, Seaboard to Invest $150 Million in Two Natural Gas-Fired Power Plants

Español
Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Energy group AES Dominicana S.A. (Santo Domingo, Republica Dominicana) announced the construction of a new natural gas-fired power plant, which will contribute 34 megawatts (MW) to the National Interconnected Electric System, through an investment of approximately $15 million.

The facility will be in San Lorenzo de Los Mina, a neighborhood close to the city of Santo Domingo, and will be equiped with a 34-MW, simple-cycle General Electric (NYSE:GE) (Fairfield, Connecticut) combustion turbine that will be fed by the same pipeline that currently transports natural gas to another facility in Los Mina owned by Dominican Power Partners (AES Los Mina). The construction of this plant is subject to approvals and compliance with regulatory procedures, and it is expected to begin in January 2011, while operations are due to begin in October 2011.

The company recently signed an agreement with Seabord Transcontinental Capital Corporation (Santo Domingo) to install a new power barge of 108 megawatts with a total investment of $135 million. This facility will be on the Ozama River in Santo Domingo, and will be equipped with six natural gas-fired Wartsila (Helsinki, Finland) engines of 17 MW each. The construction of this power barge began in October 2010 and it is expected to begin operations in June 2011.

These new power plants will reduce CO2 emissions to the environment and supply the country's energy demand, reducing the dependence on petroleum. It also will increase the speed of recovery from possible blackouts.
