Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Allen County leads all the other Ohio counties in industrial project development, with 45 projects totaling $6.2 billion. Why Allen County, you may ask? Well, one of the reasons for its growth in industrial projects is the resurgence of the local petrochemical industry. Husky Energy (TSX:HSE) is developing $2.9 billion worth of projects at its local refinery in Lima, Ohio, and chemical processors have 28 projects totaling $1.2 billion under development.

Favorable feedstock costs are driving petrochemical projects across the U.S. For more information, see April 15, 2013, article - Outlook Positive for 2013 Construction Kickoffs in U.S. Chemical Processing Industry.

All in all, there are 451 active industrial projects in Ohio totaling $31.7 billion, according to Industrial Info's North American Industrial Database. Projects are spread across 12 vertical markets, led by Power Generation, with 78 projects totaling $10.9 billion; Chemical Processing, with 106 projects totaling $5.7 billion; and Metals & Minerals, with 27 projects totaling $4.9 billion.

After Allen County, Pike County is the second-largest county for industrial projects in Ohio, with two projects totaling $4.1 billion. The top five counties are rounded out by Lucas, Hardin and Harrison, with $4 billion, $1.09 billion and $1.09 billion, respectively.

Building demolition and site-clearing work are under way for the brownfield Lima Energy site in Lima, Ohio. Construction crews began demolition work in April on a 67-acre site at the former Lima Locomotive Works between Metcalf and South Main streets. The company plans to build a $2 billion gasification, power and Technology Innovation Center complex, which will include an administration facility, research and development laboratories, an auditorium, a conference center and a clean-tech showroom.
