Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas) -- Two contracts announced by Alstom (OTC:AOMFF) (Paris, France) in late August covered the supply of a total of nine GT26 turbines for projects in the United Kingdom and the UAE (United Arab Emirates). The two contracts together are worth $ 2.45 billion to Alstom and the company will be working on projects representing 3,650 MW of installed power.

In the UK Alstom’s $1.1 billion contract will cover the construction and the maintenance and support for the combined cycle plant at Staythorpe in central England for RWE npower (OTC:RWNEF) (Essen, Germany). Under the EPC contract (engineering+procurement+construction) the company will design, supply 4 x GT26 turbines, install and commission the 1,650 MW gas powered plant The contract also covers a long-term spare parts agreement.

Andrew Duff, Group CEO of RWE npower, said, "The investment in this new power plant built by Alstom will put us on track to reduce the amount of CO2 we emit per unit of power generated by one third by 2015 compared to 2000 and by one half compared to 1990 levels." In the UAE, the Alstom led consortium was awarded a $2.2 billion contract to build 2,000 MW power plant and a 591 million liters pr day desalination plant. Alstom’s share in the project is worth around $1.35 billion. The contract was signed with the project development consortium consisting of International Power (London, UK) and Marubeni Corp (NYSE:MARUY) (Tokyo, Japan) who will implement the project with the state owned ADWEA (Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority), who commissioned the project. A consortium of Alstom and Sidem, a Veolia (NYSE:VE) (Paris, France) company, will supply the power plant and build the desalination plant respectively.

Alstom will cover the EPC functions for the 2,000 MW power plant based on five GT26 gas turbines, five heat recovery generators, three steam turbines, eight turbogenerators and associated control systems. Sidem will supply the hybrid desalination plant based on multi effect distillation and reverse osmosis technologies. The cogeneration power plant will supply steam and power to the desalination plant. This is Alstom’s first contract with an independent waterpower producer (IWPP) in the Middle East.

In the same week Alstom announced a $182 million order from Chinese industrial group Dong Fang to supply 4 x 1000 MW-Class steam turbine generator packages for the conventional island of a new nuclear power plant at Hong Yan He in Lianing in northern China. Alstom’s proven Aarabelle steam turbine technology will be used in the project.

Early in August Alstom won a $170 million contract from Dubal (Dubai Aluminum Company Limited) for the turnkey construction of a 150 MW cogeneration plant in Dubai, UAE. The company will supply EPC services along with a GT13E2 gas turbine with air cooled turbogenerator, heat recovery steam generator, a distributed control system, the electrical balance of the plant and all inter connection steam pipework for the project. Alstom previously constructed three power units for Dubai.
