A restart could happen in 6 months if business conditions improve or it could be five years down the road
Released Wednesday, August 07, 2002
Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). American Steel Foundries Corporation, a subsidiary of employee owned Amsted Industries (Chicago, Illinois), mothballed its steel foundry in Alliance, Ohio on April 12th of this year. The foundry, whose employees have been reduced from 1,380 down to 37, is still doing some finishing of railcar parts. The plant has retained a skeleton crew and is maintaining the foundry in an idled state hoping for improved market conditions to return to full operation. Jon Schumacher, plant manager for the foundry, stated, "We hope to restart operations here at some time in the future, but there are no immediate plans to do so. A restart could happen in 6 months if business conditions improve or it could be five years down the road."
American Steel Foundries Corporation is part of the ASF-Keystone group of Amsted Industries operations and includes three other foundries in Indiana and Illinois. The company had closed down a plant in East Chicago, Illinois last year. The company manufactures cast steel freight car components such as Bolsters, Side Frames, Couplers, Knuckles, Articulated Connectors, Rotary Dump Couplers, Low-Profile Center Plates, Yokes, Draft Sill End Castings, and Drawbars.
Industrialinfo.com maintains a database of 804 ferrous and non-ferrous foundries, and primary & secondary smelters in North America as part of its North American Industrial Database.
