Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Kemira GrowHow (Wavre, Belgium), a subsidiary of Yara International ASA (OTC:YARIY) (Oslo, Norway) is nearing completion of a major rebuild and restart of the company's ammonia plant located in Tertre, Belgium. This 305,000-metric-ton-per-year ammonia plant is expected to be back online in April 2010 after being offline for more than a year after a fire in the plant.
The plant is one of only two ammonia plants operating in Belgium and plays an important role in the region's supply of agricultural fertilizers and related products. With the ammonia unit offline for an extended period of time, the production of other products was limited at the site, including ammonium nitrates, ammonium phosphates, nitric acid and compounded fertilizers.
This extended downtime equaled the second such event for the company in the last several years: Kemira GrowHow experienced a fire in the nitric acid area of the plant in early 2007 that idled one of the three nitric acid units for several months. Kemira GrowHow produces an estimated 530,000 metric tons per year of nitric acid.
