June 2, 2025--Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Australian Metals & Minerals Industry is experiencing significant transformation this year, driven by technology advancements, commodity prices, evolving global demands and environmental considerations. Companies are investing in renewable energy and exploring alternative ways to reduce carbon emissions to meet the country's net-zero emissions target.
Iron ore prices have remained steady. Australia's iron ore producers are among the lowest cost producers in the world with an estimated average cost per tonne of US$33. Construction of Rio Tinto's (London, England) Western Range mine is largely complete. The company is currently focused on the Brockman Syncline 1 sustaining project development. The Rhodes Ridge project pre-feasibility study is ongoing, with completion expected by end of this year. Other sustaining projects that are progressing in the studies phase include the Hope Down 2, Gudai-Darri Expansion and capital projects on existing operational mines.
BHP Group Limited (Melbourne, Australia) is focusing on its Western Ridge project (under construction) and other sustaining projects such as Ministers North and in-plant capital projects at its Jimblebar mine and Nelson Point and Finucane Island Terminal at Port Hedland.
To reduce emissions, Australia's two largest iron ore producers, Rio Tinto and BHP, and its biggest steelmaker, Bluescope Steel (Melbourne), have partnered to investigate the development of the country's first iron making electric smelting furnace pilot plant (Neo Smelt). Rio Tinto is working with the University of Nottingham in England, as well as Metso Corporation (Matinkylä, Finland), and Sedgman Onyx (Perth, Australia), on a BioIron project, which would use raw biomass and microwave energy instead of coal to convert iron ore to iron and has the potential to support low carbon dioxide steelmaking. Fortescue (Perth) is working on a green iron pilot plant at its Christmas Creek operations. There are two proposed green steel mills in Western Australia that are seeking government approval; one is owned by Green Steel of WA at Collie and the other is owned by Port Hedland Green Steel (Perth) at Port Hedland.
Copper prices have risen since the beginning of 2025 due to an increase in global demand driven by the energy transition and infrastructure development. BHP is investing heavily in expanding its copper operations in South Australia, with a focus on the Olympic Dam Copper Smelter and Refinery Expansion project (Olympic Dam SRE Project). BHP has awarded a US$40 million engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract to a joint venture between Fluor Corporation (Irving, Texas) and Hatch (Mississauga, Ontario) to work on the SRE project. BHP is also planning on a major shutdown SCM27 at the Olympic Dam copper smelter in 2027. To support the SRE project and ensure sufficient copper ore supply in the future, BHP is also working on the Oak Dam underground copper exploration project.
Nickel prices have remained close to a five-year low due to continued strong growth in global mining and refined supply. BHP suspended it Nickel West operations in October 2024 due to market conditions. BHP plans to review the temporary suspension decision by February 2027.
Gold prices have remained at record highs since the beginning of 2024, driven by macroeconomic factors such as inflation, geopolitical uncertainty and the push for safe-haven investments. However, Australian gold production has declined due to low grade ore. Australia gold miners are working on gold exploration projects to define resources. To fast-track project development and generate cash flow, most junior minors are planning to develop a gold mine and transport the ore to third-party processing facilities for toll treatment. To reduce project capital expenditures, companies such as Medallion Metals (West Perth, Australia) and Horizon Minerals Acquisition Group (Corpus Christi, Texas) have acquired a care-and-maintenance nickel processing plant to modify the facility to process gold and copper ore.
Metallurgical coal prices have fallen due to weak steel production in China. Thermal coal prices have declined due to rising supply and soft demand. Australia coal projects remain broadly unchanged with development mostly limited to brownfield and maintenance projects.
